Graduation Night: From Underdogs to Unstoppable K9s
Share
On March 4th at the Plainfield Police Department, we celebrated something truly special—the official certification of five incredible K9s. These dogs, once hurt, abandoned, and overlooked, are now recognized law enforcement officers, standing proudly beside their handlers as certified police canines.

This wasn’t just any graduation. It was a testament to resilience, redemption, and purpose.

The Journey to the Badge
Each of our graduates completed an intense 160-hour training program—with no days off—proving their determination, skill, and drive to serve. But their journey didn’t start here.
These dogs came from all walks of life, many with tragic pasts—the castaways, the abused, the forgotten. And yet, they have overcome every obstacle, transforming into elite working K9s. Last night, they stood alongside their handlers, ready to serve their communities and protect the people who once protected them.

Meet the Graduates
- 🐾 K9 Kilo – Wolcott Police Department
- 🐾 K9 Gunner – Greencastle Police Department
- 🐾 K9 Lucky – Tipton County Sheriff's Department
- 🐾 K9 Minna – Madison County Sheriff's Department
- 🐾 K9 Chase – Bargersville Police Department
While K9 Minna couldn’t attend due to operational needs, she was with us in spirit, and we have something special planned for her official ceremony soon!

More Than Just a K9 Program
Traditionally, acquiring a police K9—including training, vet care, and equipment—costs $25,000 to $35,000, with annual recertification fees ranging from $1,500 to $2,000. For many agencies, these costs are simply out of reach.
Thanks to our generous supporters and donors, every single one of these dogs, along with their equipment, training, initial vet care, and certifications, was provided at ZERO cost to their agencies.
That means:
✅ Five more K9s now have a home, a family, and a purpose.
✅ Five departments now have fully trained police canines without burdening their budgets.
✅ Five communities are safer with these paws on patrol.
A Reflection on the Good in the World
In law enforcement and animal rescue, it’s easy to become cynical. We see the worst of humanity—the neglect, the cruelty, the injustice. But last night was a reminder that the world is also full of kindness, redemption, and second chances.
The world reflects what we choose to see. If we let ourselves grow cold, the world responds in kind. But when we look for goodness and compassion, we find that it’s still out there. We have nightmares, but we also have dreams. We face villains, but we also stand alongside heroes.
To our handlers and their new K9 partners—you’ve already made a difference. Now keep going.

More to Come
In the coming posts, we’ll be highlighting the awards presented at graduation, as well as thanking the key donors and supporters who made this possible.
A huge thank you to Shotwell Photos and Nick Shotwell for capturing these amazing moments. You can view more photos from last night’s ceremony here.
